Job description

Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Sport and Exercise Psychology) (4362)

We are recruiting a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology to provide research and teaching based on supporting elite athlete performance and/or community sports participation.

One of the largest research-led science and technology educators in the UK, our Faculty of Science and Engineering offers a world-class teaching environment covering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. With genuine trailblazing specialisms, our research has real-world impact and cultivates lasting relationships with businesses, the government, sports organisations and the general public to share our innovation and expertise.

We are investing strongly in our Institute of Sport; aiming to be a global leader in sports education and research. New research and teaching spaces provide a unique range of sports performance facilities, human movement laboratories and clinical imaging for detailed investigations of athletes, patients and the general public. These facilities sit within the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences in the Faculty of Science and Engineering and serve the wider university as a beacon for research excellence and collaboration with leading sports and health organisations locally, nationally and internationally.

A major part of our strategy is to recruit research-active academics to raise the profile and quality of research and education. For this particular position, we are seeking a specialist in Sport and Exercise Psychology to deliver high quality, innovative and collaborative research as well as research-informed, vibrant teaching to inspire our students. The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • A PhD in Sport and Exercise Psychology or related discipline.
  • An established track record of publishing high quality original research in sport and exercise psychology, applying for external research funding and translating research findings for athlete/public/patient benefit.
  • Accreditation with the British Psychological Society and/or HCPC registration.
  • Experience of delivering high quality teaching and student experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Existing collaborations with elite sports organisations and academic discipline leaders that may add value to our current education and research agendas.

The successful candidate will be based in the new Institute of Sport building and will access the Platt Lane Sports Complex to develop links with a wide range of sports organisations around Greater Manchester and beyond. Our facilities also include a new Siemens 3T Magnetom Vida with a variety of dedicated coils alongside MR compatible cycle ergometry, dynamometry, neuro stimulation and EEG. We have human performance laboratories with extreme environment chamber, eye-tracking, x-ray imaging, EEG, EMG, CPET, VICON, instrumented treadmill and staircase for research aligned to our thematic areas of Sports Medicine and Elite Performance, Healthy Life-course and Movement Impairment (clinical conditions).
