Postdoctoral Research Associate in Antimicrobial Drug Discovery (1313)

Dr Mark McLaughlin, Lecturer in Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry & Dr Jonathan Butler, Lecturer in Microbiology, are looking for a postdoctoral scientist to work on an interdisciplinary project focused on the development of novel antimicrobial compounds. This is a fantastic opportunity for a self-motivated, innovative, meticulous and organised chemist with excellent communication skills to work on a highly interdisciplinary project.

The goal of this research project is to design and synthesise novel scaffolds that have the potential to have pronounced antimicrobial activity. The successful candidate will take a lead role in the development of new reaction methodology to allow for the ready synthesise of traditionally hard to access scaffolds. Antimicrobial resistance in bacteria is an ever-increasing global problem and deaths associated with multidrug resistant bacterial infections are expected to reach 10 million per year by 2050, overtaking cancer as the leading cause of mortality. Very few novel antimicrobial agents are being introduced into the clinical setting, partly due to the complexity of licensing regulations, the costs involved in such research and the need to identify novel cellular target sites.

You will develop cutting edge synthetic strategies to access these scaffolds, employing both novel transition and earth metal catalysts to mediate useful transformations. You will have access to the cutting edge facilities at Manchester Met including working in our newly refurbished (£1.5 million) synthetic labs. You will have access to newly acquired equipment including a glove box, Biotage purification system, solvent drying system and a full range of analytical equipment such as HPLC, LCMS, and NMR. Furthermore, the successful candidate will gain experience working at the forefront of microbiological research. The Microbiology research group is a multidisciplinary team with modern Category II laboratory facilities, dedicated cell culture and microscopy suites, and molecular microbiology expertise. Research is centred around microorganisms and their role in health and disease, hospital transmissions and food contamination. 

About you

You should have, or be in the final stages, of a PhD in synthetic organic or medicinal chemistry or other relevant field. Key qualities should include independent thinking, ability to work in a team and good communication skills.
