Automation Test Engineer (4168)

With 34,000 students, Manchester Metropolitan University is one of the largest academic institutions in the UK and is developing its award-winning digital capabilities to include data warehousing and analytics on the Microsoft cloud. We are looking for a Test Analyst to join us on a permanent basis to support the University in migrating its warehouse data ingest to a new student records system, while delivering advanced reports and data feeds to support continuous improvement of course performance and student engagement.


About the role:

We are looking for experienced Automation Test Engineers who can join a growing testing function and lead on the introduction and setting up automation testing frameworks from scratch to be utilised across a spectrum of bespoke and enterprise systems. You will work closely with development teams, providing technical skills and expertise to build automated testing solutions across a wide range of major university systems. The job will require you to act as the main point of contact for all test automation activities and provide knowledge and guidance on technologies, tooling and frameworks to meet the needs of the team. You will be required to be a self-starter and work independently whist also participating in both the Testing and Development functions within ISDS.


What we expect:

  • Solid experience in automated testing with the ability to build frameworks from scratch.
  • Significant hands on experience in software testing and QA activity including the creation and maintenance of efficient test approaches, templates and scripts, using both manual and automation techniques.
  • Acting as the main point for contact Test Automation.
  • Knowledge and experience of using test management and bug tracking tools to record, track, and trace bugs raised during the testing cycle
  • Working with Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment in an Agile environment.
  • The ability to communicate technical requirements to all levels of stakeholder within ISDS.
  • Produce high-quality documentation including test plans and test cases and communicate these to business users and stakeholders.
  • Identification, documentation and then tracking of defects through to a resolution.


We need someone who recognises that there is always more to learn, and that yesterday's best solution isn't always todays. You will need to be passionate about IT and Testing, and be experienced working in fast paced, innovative development environments. It is essential that you are open and engaging and are comfortable presenting, explaining and justifying your approach to testing with a variety of stakeholders and customers across the University.

The role requires a high level of skill working with a range of development and testing techniques and the ability to collaborate closely with both development and business analysis to provide high quality deliverables.



  • DevOps and Azure system knowledge.
  • ISTQB Certification.
  • Knowledge of higher education business processes
  • Familiarity with Agile with Jira & Confluence or similar
