Faculty of Business and Law: Head of Education (Reader or Professor)

Manchester Metropolitan University’s Faculty of Business and Law offers a full range of programmes to approximately 10,000 students across undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA qualifications. The Business School is triple accredited (EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA), placing us within a global elite of institutions for business education and research. The Law School’s academic and professional programmes are characterised by innovation, research and a practice-based understanding of the emerging legal and professional services landscape.

The role

This role offers the successful candidate the opportunity to be the dedicated strategic lead in the area of education for our Faculty, working in partnership with other Faculty Heads, Heads of Department, and a variety of key stakeholders to achieve ongoing educational excellence in business and law disciplines. The post holder will be responsible for setting and implementing a long-term Faculty strategic vision for education that supports that of the wider University. The appointee will be a member of the Faculty Executive Group and report to the Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor, as well as working closely with the University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education.

Knowledge & Experience

Faculty Heads of Education should:

  • Have management experience at a senior academic level (e.g. Reader, Professor)
  • Have a very strong academic record and standing in education and pedagogy
  • Have specialist knowledge relevant to the thematic area, such as: an understanding of the challenges currently facing undergraduate and postgraduate education in the Business/Law subject areas
  • Have an appreciation of the market and financial dynamics of education in a large university faculty, and an insight into how to optimise educational performance and outcomes in light of these.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to: communicate a clear vision to a wide range of audiences, to negotiate effectively, and to develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Have very good diplomatic skills with a positive, inclusive and collegial leadership style and the ability to engage, inspire and motivate others.
  • Have evidence of, and commitment to, ongoing personal and professional development.
  • Have a commitment to equality and diversity policies and objectives.

Other desirable requirements:

  • Experience of working with relevant sector bodies to contribute, on behalf of the Faculty, to a wider external agenda for HE.
  • Demonstrable track record of meeting education metrics at Programme Leader/ Subject Leader/ Associate Head of Department or Head of Department level.
  • Be able to travel, as necessary, within the UK and overseas.
  • Experience of developing an engaged curriculum with connectivity to external stakeholders (e.g. businesses, and public and voluntary sectors) that will provide opportunities for students to connect beyond academia.

Terms & Conditions of Office

This is a permanent academic position, with the expectation that the person appointed will serve as Faculty Head of Education for four years, at which point they will either return to a substantive Reader/Professorial position or remain as Faculty Head for a further four years.

The post-holder will be work-loaded 0.8 for the Head of Education role and 0.2 for research and/or teaching.

This appointment can be made either at Reader or Professorial level. For Reader appointments, it will be at Grade 10 on the University Single Pay Spine (with an additional honorarium at Grade 11 for the four year rotational responsibilities as Faculty Head of Education).  Professorial appointments will be as per the University's Professorial Pay Bands (with an additional honorarium for the four year rotational responsibilities as Faculty Head of Education).
