Research Associate (RA) in Microbiology (Grade 7; Fixed-Term 24 months):
We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and dedicated research associate (RA) to join the laboratory of Professor Christopher van der Gast to complete a series of four collaborative microbiome-related pilot projects that are being coordinated between the Northern Care Alliance (NCA) & Manchester Metropolitan University over a 24-month period. The successful candidate will work closely with a NCA-funded clinical research fellow (CRF) on the processing of patient sample collections for experimental analysis and the isolation of clinically relevant microorganisms derived from the pilot projects. The RA will use a range of molecular microbiology techniques to carry out investigations in microbiome research, pathogen genomics, microbial ecology and evolution, and host immunology.
Candidates will hold, or be nearing completion, of a doctoral level degree in Molecular Microbiology, or a closely related subject and have expertise in molecular microbiology or microbiome research. The role will include designing and carrying out experiments, data collection, analysis and interpretation of data to produce high-quality publications in internationally recognised journals. The successful candidate will have excellent research potential, demonstrated by publications and conference presentations, together with research skills and experience to work independently as well as in a team.
This post is based in the Department of Life Science, one of the largest Departments in the University attracting high numbers of students on a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The Department also provides research training programmes for doctorate and Masters level postgraduate research students. The Department resides within the Faculty of Science and Engineering and benefits from spacious, modern and well-equipped teaching and research facilities having benefitted from recent significant and on-going investment. This particular post sits within the Microbiology group of the Centre for Bioscience and is available on a fixed-term basis for 24 months.
