Senior Azure Infrastructure Engineer (3400)

This role is based in the Infrastructure and Operations department of ISDS.  The primary objective of this role is to maintain and develop the University’s Cloud Services to assist other areas of both ISDS Services, and the wider University in developing systems that align to supporting strategic objectives. 


It is an exciting time to be joining the Infrastructure & Operations department at the University, with an infrastructure transformation programme currently underway.  Over the coming years Cloud Services will play a key role in transforming how we deliver digital solutions to our users.  Initiatives include the adoption of Microsoft Azure, Support of AWS, implementing hybrid-cloud solutions and services and work on enhancing our security capability.


About the role:
This technical role is key in the delivery of out next generation Cloud Platform at the University.  You will be responsible for the delivery of both Project and BAU work to facilitate a stable, resilient, scalable and secure cloud environment to our end users.  As a Senior Engineer your experience will allow you to become a significant contributor to the future development of University systems.   


The role requires detailed knowledge and expertise in Cloud services.  Alongside this, it is expected that the individual will have experience of on-premise data centre services, security principles and an understanding of other key IT based Infrastructure Services.  The post-holder will frequently be required to undertake technical leadership and management of work packages and initiatives within the Infrastructure and Operations department.


About you:

You will be required to undertake some or all of the duties below: -

  • Design, specify, project lead and deliver the appropriate Cloud based technologies for the University, in conjunction with strategic and technical leadership from the Head of Core Infrastructure Services and you Team Leader.
  • Provide high level technical expertise in the development, support and maintenance of Azure and relevant on-premise services that form part of the estate.
  • Provide technical expertise to projects which develop new IT services, including new services which meet academic requirements for teaching and research.
  • Management of a broad range of Azure Services such as but not limited to Application Gateways, APIM, Function/Logic/Web Apps, Application Service Environments and other core Azure Services that provide University based Integration solutions.
  • You will be expected to work with our Development teams to oversee the manage the use of Microsoft DevOps.
  • Work with key stakeholders to facilitate the take on of University Projects into Business as Usual where requirements for Cloud based services exist.
  • Take a lead role in the research, evaluation, development and deployment of new and emerging technologies relevant to Cloud Services and wider Infrastructure Services.
  • Formulating processes to ensure the Cloud infrastructure is secure, reliable, resilient and is capable of rapid recovery in the event of planned or unplanned circumstances disrupting normal operations.
  • Work with colleagues across the department to facilitate the implementation of new Infrastructure Services.
  • Maintain personal credibility and authority to consult, influence and negotiate with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Understand and implement IT security into all aspects of Cloud operations.
  • Deliver technical mentoring to junior members of the wider Infrastructure team
