Web Developer – PHP (3695)

We are looking for an enthusiastic PHP Web Applications Developer to join our team at Manchester Met and support the Digital Team in our continued success in providing our University's web sites.

Information Systems and Digital Services is central to where we are going as a university and what sort of experience we offer to both our professional colleagues and our students. We are committed to developing and maintaining highly usable, fast, flexible and personalised Information Systems services that reflect the changing needs of our growing university.

What you'll be doing

As a Web Applications Developer, you will join one of our small teams of experienced agile developers on the development of the University's suite of web applications delivered by the Web Development team.

In addition you will:

Develop and maintain the portfolio of web applications, web services and integrations with internal information systems and external third-party systems.

Support the ongoing development and maintenance of the University's web estate and digital road map, in particular the University's corporate website and associated databases. Ensuring applications and system integrations are sufficiently security hardened and follow web security best practices.

What we expect from you

Experience of:

  • developing websites and applications in a large organisation taking into account customer needs as well as internal and external standards, with a strong emphasis on customer service.
  • using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP to develop scalable and extensive websites and web applications supported by databases.
  • knowledge of frameworks like Laravel, Symfony, CakePHP.
  • development using JavaScript frameworks like VueJS, NuxtJS.
  • successfully managing and prioritising multiple and complex projects and delivering on time and to budget.
  • conducting systems analysis and database design and modelling.
  • developing website functionality and web applications that use web services and web APIs.
  • planning, testing, implementing and documenting web applications using agile methodologies.
  • developing and maintaining web coding standards and guidelines
  • developing and maintaining websites and web applications hosted on Azure Cloud based environments.

Excellent knowledge of:

  • PHP and developing using MVC frameworks (e.g. Laravel, CodeIgniter, Zend, Symfony).
  • Frontend web technologies: HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
  • Drupal.
  • Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).

Good working knowledge of:

  • using GIT for version control.
  • developing frontend UIs using Bootstrap.
  • Linux file system and command line tools.
  • Load Balancing, Caching, AWS and/or Azure.
  • Proficiency in developing and supporting  MySQL, MSSQL and Oracle databases.
  • Strong understanding of the web design and development process and of web authoring and web accessibility standards.
  • Understanding how to develop server-side functionality, web applications and web services that adhere to web security best practices.

Desirables

  • Awareness of legal issues associated with the web, particularly in relation to accessibility.
  • Knowledge of package management tools such as composer and bower.
