As we enter our third century, we are delighted to launch our ‘Third Century Fellowship Scheme’.

The Fellowship is aimed at exceptional researchers, in the early stages of their post-doctoral career, who aim to make their mark in the field of independent research. As an emerging research leader, you will have significant experience and a notable track record of research outputs in your area of research.

By joining our Fellowship Scheme, you’ll play a leading part in our global research offering and join our community, working collaboratively across multidisciplinary and diverse teams with state-of-the-art facilities and work environment.

What are we offering as part of the Third Century Fellowship Scheme?

You will benefit from a three-year development programme including:

  • Exceptional research environment and facilities to support YOUR ambitions/research

  • You will have access to a three-year development programme, which will be underpinned by the Leadership Lens on the Vitae Researcher Development Framework, a well-established sector-wide tool for the career and professional development of research leaders. This will include mentorship throughout the programme and access to coaching sessions

During the term of the fellowship, you will be publishing internationally excellent and world-leading outputs and will be pursuing external funding opportunities to realise your future research ambitions. You will also have the opportunity, when relevant, to prepare and deliver short courses.

The Scheme begins with an initial appointment to a fixed-term Research Fellow post with the strong expectation to transition to permanent Senior Lecturer or as a Reader, after three years, dependant on your performance and potential as assessed through the scheme.

Science and Engineering

The Faculty of Science and Engineering is one of the largest research-led technology educators in the UK, offering nearly 100 undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in a huge variety of subjects, spanning five academic departments. More than 5,500 students benefit from high-quality teaching, informed by a powerful combination of emerging industry knowledge and up-to-the-minute research.

Our academic community of around 350 colleagues share their world-class expertise with students, equipping them with sought-after analytical and problem-solving skills and preparing them for the world of work. Our leading research addresses some of the biggest challenges we face today, from fuel cell innovation and waste management to cyber security and health and wellbeing. 100% of our research impact in Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences was defined as world-leading or internationally excellent and 75% was ranked at the highest 4* level, in REF 2021.

Science and Engineering

Arts and Humanities

With more than 9,000 students, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities supports a large and vibrant community, instilling curiosity, creativity and ambition. Combining the knowledge and expertise of more than 530 academic staff, we foster a truly interdisciplinary approach to learning, which spans a uniquely diverse range of subjects, from journalism to fashion to architecture, across 11 departments and schools.

The faculty’s academic staff lead on research that is highly respected nationally and internationally. REF 2021 ranked us 2nd in the UK for research power in Art and Design, and in the top ten for research power in English Language and Literature. The faculty is home to Manchester School of Art, one of the oldest and largest providers of art and design courses in the UK, established more than 180 years ago to provide design training to the manufacturing industry. The Manchester School of Architecture, an innovative collaboration between Manchester Met and the University of Manchester, is currently ranked 5th in the world.

Business and Law

The Faculty of Business and Law consists of our triple-accredited Business School, which is one of the top business schools in the UK, holding the globally recognised trio of accreditations from EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA, and the renowned Manchester Law School. 

The purpose of the Faculty is to transform lives, businesses and communities through excellent teaching, world-class research, and impactful regional, national and international collaborations with industrial and societal stakeholders.  

The Faculty is home to world leading research in Place Management, Decent Work and Productivity, and Sports Policy. These – and other areas – contributed to the Faculty’s REF 2021 results, where we were ranked in the top 40 for research power. True to our mission, our research also makes a difference to lives, businesses and communities. At the last REF, 100% of our research impact was externally evaluated as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. We ranked 16th for research impact across all business and management schools in the UK.

Business and Law

Health and Education

The Faculty of Health and Education is Manchester Metropolitan University’s Faculty for the Professions, consisting of our Schools of Nursing & Public Health, Education and Psychology; and our Departments of Health Professions and Social Care & Social Work. Our collective passion and commitment to challenge inequalities and improve lives is a central feature of our work. We do this by connecting research, education and practice, utilising our networks and relationships with external partners and schools, accreditation bodies and the wider community. Our research is delivered by interdisciplinary teams who undertake projects to answer important questions and unmet needs in health, social care and education. The outputs from our research have real impact, influencing policy and practice.

Putting people and communities at the centre, we strive to improve lives; supporting individuals, families, and communities to make positive changes. As a third century fellow, you will work with us to transform the future of health and education.

Health and Education

As we celebrate our 200 years and move into the next century of our journey, we are launching a Third Century Research Fellowship Scheme focussed on our research strengths. This scheme is aimed to support early career researchers of outstanding promise to establish themselves as strong, independent researchers on the global stage. We hope to appoint up to 15 fellows across the four faculties. We will invest in our fellows ensuring there is career support and development to create the next generation of leaders at the University. I am excited about the scheme and the research opportunities that it will bring.
