As IT & Digital (IT&D), we help to create the University of the future by co-designing new ways of working, enhancing productivity, reducing complexity, supporting innovation, and providing the insights to drive continual improvement. Embracing a digital future in an evolving modern university, you will be working in partnership with our academic and Professional Services colleagues to deliver digital services that help the University achieve its strategic objectives in teaching and research, nationally & globally.

The University has a Cloud-First strategy and adopts Microsoft Cloud Platform solutions where it is appropriate to do so.  We have a number of exciting programmes and projects in delivery, focussed on modernising infrastructure and services by adopting cloud platform and services. Part of the Infrastructure & Operations Department, the Senior Cloud Engineer will be part of the Cloud Operations Team, with responsibility for designing, implementing, and managing Azure-based solutions to support the university's diverse IT needs.  As the Senior Cloud Engineer, you will collaborate with various departments to ensure our cloud infrastructure is secure, efficient, and aligned with the university's goals. You will also lead on several project technical workstreams and develop and manage business operations and service improvements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement Azure infrastructure solutions to support academic and administrative applications.
  • Manage and optimize Azure resources to ensure high availability, performance, and cost-efficiency.
  • Automate deployment, monitoring, and management of Azure-based applications and services.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and IT teams to integrate Azure services into university systems.
  • Ensure security and compliance of Azure infrastructure in accordance with university policies and industry standards.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to Azure infrastructure and services.
  • Stay current with the latest Azure technologies and best practices to drive continuous improvement. 

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Extensive experience as a Cloud Engineer with a focus on Microsoft Azure.
  • Strong knowledge of Azure services, including virtual machines, storage, networking, and security.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Azure Resource Manager (ARM) templates, Terraform, or Bicep.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python, or Bash.
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Possessing Azure certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Azure DevOps Engineer Expert) with Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices will be an added advantage to your application.
